Nigeria’s Maiduguri braces for more floods as dam works begin

قناة Al Jazeera לפני 16 שעות דווח

As northeast Nigeria's rainy season reaches its peak, residents of Maiduguri are grappling with fear and uncertainty. Just ten months after a catastrophic dam collapse claimed over 150 lives and submerged half the city, repairs to the critical Alau Dam are only now beginning. The disaster exposed years of neglect in Nigeria's ageing dam infrastructure, with poor maintenance and silted rivers turning annual rains into potential catastrophes. While officials assure that the damaged structure will be fixed within two years, many residents remain sceptical, haunted by memories of last year's devastation and the looming threat of another flood.
