Northeast India floods aftermath: Devastated communities appeal for govt assistance

Devastating floods in northeast India have left hundreds of thousands struggling to rebuild their lives. At least 48 people have died and over 800,000 have been affected across the region following heavy monsoon rains. Displaced residents are pleading for government assistance after losing homes and belongings. The disaster has also impacted wildlife, with more than half of Assam's Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary underwater, threatening endangered one-horned rhinos and hampering anti-poaching efforts. As floodwaters slowly recede, many remain in relief camps hoping to return home soon. However, the hilly terrain has suffered over 700 landslides and rockfalls in recent days, compounding the challenges faced by affected communities. With inadequate compensation from previous floods and mounting losses, residents fear they may struggle to recover without significant government support. Al Jazeera’s Paul Ging reports.
