South Africa’s Ramaphosa in the US for talks with Trump: Can they fix tricky relations?

قناة Al Jazeera לפני 1 חודש דווח

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa is currently on a state visit to the United States, in what his government describes as an attempt to “reset” the relationship between the two countries, one that many experts say has become the frostiest in decades. The visit follows just days after the US welcomed a group of 59 white South African “refugees,” whom President Donald Trump claims are being persecuted in South Africa because of their race and face a “genocide.” They recently arrived in the US under a special relocation plan and will be allowed to settle there. Ramaphosa’s government strongly denies these allegations, maintaining that whites, who own over 70 percent of the land despite comprising just 7 percent of the population, are not discriminated against. President Ramaphosa is scheduled to hold talks with President Trump on Wednesday during his visit. Al Jazeera’s Fahmida Miller reports from Pretoria.
